Therapist guiding client through religious trauma therapy session to overcome spiritual abuse

If your relationship with faith has left you feeling controlled, silenced, or afraid rather than free, you may be carrying religious trauma. Spiritual abuse can happen in any faith tradition and often involves manipulation, control, shame, or the misuse of religious authority to harm rather than heal. It can leave lasting effects on your mental health, your relationships, and your sense of self.

At Hopeology Wellness, we understand that faith and pain can coexist in complicated ways. Our therapists provide a safe, nonjudgmental space to process religious trauma without requiring you to abandon your faith or defend it. Whether you are questioning beliefs you once held firmly, healing from a spiritually abusive relationship or religious community, or working through purity culture harm, legalism, or religious perfectionism, we are here to walk alongside you.

Signs you may be experiencing religious trauma or spiritual abuse include:

  • Fear, shame, or anxiety connected to religious teachings or community

  • Difficulty trusting your own thoughts, feelings, or judgment

  • Being shunned, isolated, or punished for questioning beliefs

  • Confusion about identity, values, or faith after leaving a religious group or role

  • Symptoms of PTSD connected to religious experiences

  • Struggling to reconcile lingering faith with painful religious experiences

What To Expect

Using trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR, we help you process painful memories and experiences at your own pace. Healing from religious trauma often means learning to separate harmful teachings from genuine faith, rebuilding trust in yourself, and reconnecting with a sense of safety — spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. You do not have to choose between your faith and your healing. We can help you hold both.
